like below fixes the issue Try using a "change" event listener, and test if the button should be enabled or disabled on each change.
code :
document.addEventListener("change", validate);

// I need the output for task,source,and the text value for output to not be blank/"00:00:00" for the button to be enabled.
function validate() {
  const ready = $("#task").val() && $("#source").val() && $("#output").text() !== "00:00:00";
  $("#btn").prop("disabled", ! ready);
}

code :
var checkBoxes = $('input.compulsory'),
    submitButton = $('#continue');

checkBoxes.change(function () {
    submitButton.attr("disabled", checkBoxes.is(":not(:checked)"));
    if(checkBoxes.is(":not(:checked)")) {
        submitButton.addClass('disabled');
    } else {
        submitButton.removeClass('disabled');
    }

like below fixes the issue The last link you are referring to hold the solution you are looking for. But the documentation is a little bit vague, guess it need a solid example. It is not clear how you create the buttons (you show both methods) but below is an inline example, it would work with constructor as well. Simply give the button a class, like .edit and set it to disabled from start :
code :
var table = $('#example').DataTable( {
  dom: 'Bfrtip',
  select: true,
  buttons: [
    {
      text: 'Edit',
      className: 'edit',
      enabled: false,
      action: function (e, dt, node, config) {
        //do something
      }
    },
    {
      text: 'Add',
      action: function (e, dt, node, config) {
        //do something
      }
    }
  ]
})
$('#example').on('select.dt deselect.dt', function() {
  table.buttons( ['.edit'] ).enable(
    table.rows( { selected: true } ).indexes().length === 0 ? false : true
  )
})

With these it helps The problem is that your if condition is being met, then your else condition is also being met. Considering you're toggling the visibility of the targets in both conditions, you're actually successfully showing the right element, then immediately hiding it again.
To resolve your problem, all you actually have to do is remove your else statement entirely. This can be seen here.
code :
// Toggle award/year slider
$('#award').click(function(){
  $('#awardOptions').show();
  $('#yearOptions').hide();
});
$('#year').click(function(){
  $('#awardOptions').hide();
  $('#yearOptions').show();
});
