seems to work fine The scenario... , You need to return the result of your recursive function:
code :
 console.log("property not found on " + scope.$id);
 return this.findPropertyOwner(scope.$parent, propertyName);

it helps some times Each directive is just some javascript that associates a DOM node with a given scope. The same way you think of the DOM tree, you can think of a "scope tree". On the other hand, services are just singleton objects that can be injected and used anywhere. They have no implicit relationship to the DOM/scope tree.
By injecting $rootScope into your DeptFactory, you are giving it access to the entire scope tree. When you call $broadcast(), you are sending an event throughout the entire tree, beginning at the root, and then propagating outwards to all of the leaf scopes.

I hope this helps you . I have a service with an object, and that object has a property value, and I set this to reference to a scope value of a controller. Why when I update scope value, services value is not updated, or vice versa???? , Try this -
code :
app.service('Item', function(){
    this.value = 0; // instead of value return { value: 0 }
});

app.controller('ACtrl', function ($scope, Item) {
   console.log('Item', Item);

   $scope.value = Item.value;
   console.log('$scope.value', $scope.value);

   Item.value = 2;
   console.log('Item', Item);
});
Item Constructor {value: 0}
$scope.value 0
Item Constructor {value: 2}

I hope this helps you . You need to inject $http in your service, if you haven't already. No need to inject it on your controller if you're not invoking it from there (which I guess you're not doing, because if you are, what's the point in making a new service...?)
However, you're including $http (which is a service) as a parameter of your returnParent function; that's why the undefined or null reference error pops up.

will help you You can use ng-repeat. wrap the data up inside a list. If the list is empty, nothing will be shown (e.g. ng-show="false")
Javascript:
code :
    $scope.success = newValue ? [newValue.success] : []
  <p ng-repeat="message in success track by $index" class="validation-success">{{message}}</p>

I hope this helps . my factory code , The getAppDataItem function needs to return a promise:
code :
.factory('appData', ['connectionManager', function($connectionManager) {
    return {
        getAppDataItem: function(apiName, params) {
            console.log('Getting value...');
            //$connectionManager.sendRequest({
            //return promise
            return $connectionManager.sendRequest({
                'apiName': apiName,
                'params':{
                    '@key': "'" + params['@key'] + "'"
                }
            }).then(function(res){
                console.log('Retrieved data ', res.data);
                return res.data;
            });
        }
    }
}]);
var promise = appData.getAppDataItem('getItemFromAppData', {
        '@key': 'last_emp_id'
    });
promise.then( function (x) {
    console.log(x);
});
